AL-ABBAS IBNE ALI (A.S.), THE MOON OF BANU HASHIM

Al-Abbas has a full-dimensional history of ancestry, honorable lineage, knowledge, clemency, courage, munificence, adoration, ascetism, and all nobilities and virtues. His mother belonged to a brave tribe. She herself was an honorable and dignified lady who loved Ahlul Bayt (a.s.). His father, Imam Ali (a.s.) was the Nafs-e-Rasool. She felt honored to serve the “Princes of the Youths of Paradise”.

Al-Abbas was raised in the most pious environment. He always called and treated Imam Husayn (a.s.) as “Master”. His epithets include Babul Husayn, Qamar-e-Bani Hashim, Saqqaa, Hamil ul-Liwaa, Kebsh ul Kateeba (highest commander), Baab ul-Hawaa’ij (door to settlement of needs), and Al-Abdus Salih (the righteous servant). His personality traits include courage, faith, patience, disdain, loyalty, determination, mercy, and kindness.

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) praised Al-Abbas as, “My uncle Al-Abbas was clear sighted and steadfastly faithful. He fought with his brother al-Husayn, did very well and was martyred.”
The Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) said, “Salaam be upon Abu Fadhl al-Abbas, son of Amir al-Mu’minin. He preferred his brother to himself, supplied with (opportunities of) today for (rewards of) tomorrow, sacrificed himself for his brother, protected him, hurried for fetching him water, and his two hands were cut off for this. May Allah curse his killers.”

Al-Abbas was the prayer of Imam Ali (a.s.) and as he foresaw the Tragedy of Karbala, he wanted his son to protect Imam Husayn (a.s.) and the AhlulBayt. The womenfolk were comfortable while Al-Abbas was around. During the travel from Madinah to Makkah and later to Karbala, Al-Abbas was responsible for the safety and security of the entire caravan. Al-Abbas negotiated with the Yazidi army once on the sands of Karbala. On the night of 9th of Muharram, when the enemy tried to attack, Al-Abbas negotiated to postpone the fight for a day. He was a strong and brave warrior but patiently followed the instructions of his brother Imam Husayn (a.s.).
On the Day of Ashura, when all the companions and the family members were martyred, Al-Abbas sought permission from the Imam to sacrifice his own life. The Imam said,” You are the standard bearer of my army.” But Al-Abbas insisted on going to the battlefield. The Imam told him to fetch water for children and the women. Hence, he took a water skin and rode towards River Euphrates. The Yazidi forces fled and left the riverbank to Al-Abbas. He himself was thirsty for three days, he extended his hand to the water, he remembered the thirst of his brother as well as the children and harem, hence he threw away water. After the demonstration of this altruism that exceeded any other in all dimensions of time and space, Al-Abbas filled up the water skin and rushed towards the camp. In the meantime, enemy forces surrounded him trying to prevent him, but he charged ahead inflicting heavy losses like his father in courageous situations. His right hand was cut but instantly he held the standard in his left hand. A few moments later, another man hidden behind a tree attacked to cut his left hand also. Bleeding profusely, he held the ware skin in his teeth. Meanwhile a spear hit the water skin and caused the water to dribble on the ground. Another man struck him with an iron post. He fell on the ground and called the Imam saying his salutation. The Imam reached al-Abbas saying, “My spine is now broken, and I have lost everything.” His last wish was not to take his body in the camp. It is said that the Imam said, “Abbas the whole life you called me master, now call me brother.” Al-Abbas complied with it.

HAZRAT QASIM BIN IMAM HASAN (A.S.)

Hazrat Qasim was the son of Imam Hasan (a.s.) and lady Umme Farwah (s.a.). No authentic record of his date of birth is available but it is said that he was about 3 years old at the sad martyrdom of Imam Hasan (a.s.). Sayyid-ush-Shuhadah, Imam Husayn (a.s.) raised him and Hazart Abbas (a.s.), the Commander of the army of Imam Husayn (a.s.) trained him with the skills of sword fighting.
When Imam Husayn (a.s.) left Madinah Munawwarah, Hazrat Qasim and his mother accompanied him.

Imam Husayn (a.s.) and his entire family, including Sayyida Zaynab binte Ali (s.a.) and her two sons; Aoun and Muhammad, first proceeded to Makkah and later travelled towards Karbala/Kufa. They reached Karbala on the 2nd Muharram ul-Haraam 61 A.H. Like Muawiya, Yazid (l.a.)’s army used the same inhuman tactic of depriving water to the camp of Imam Husayn (a.s.) from the 7th Muharram ul-Haraam. On the night of the 9th Muharram, Imam Husayn gave a sermon and foretold the people about the impending martyrdom and offered to lift his allegiance (Bai’at) from the people and advised them that they will be guaranteed their place in Paradise and they could leave and save their lives. But the companions reused to leave him and vowed to fight with him till they achieve martyrdom. Them the Imam (a.s.) showed everyone’s abode in the Paradise. Hazrat Qasim (a.s.) who had not attained puberty till then inquired from his uncle if his name was also written in the manifest of martyrs? The Imam (a.s.) asked, “How do you feel about death?” He replied, “Sweeter than honey!”

On the Day of Ashura, Hazrat Qasim sought permission from his uncle Imam Husayn who would not give him permission. He went back to his mother and asked for help. Hazrat Umme Farwa (s.a.) produced a letter written by Imam Hasan (a.s.) addressing Hazrat Qasim saying that a time will come when your uncle will be surrounded by tens of thousands of enemies, then you should sacrifice your life to safe Islam. Hazrat Qasim was happy and took the letter to Imam Husayn (a.s.) who wept seeing his brother’s writing reluctantly gave permission to Hazrat Qasim to go for jehad. The Imam himself prepared Hazrat Qasim, but he was so young that no armor could fit him, his feet did not reach the saddle. Somehow, he was readied and sent to the battlefield. Humaid bin Muslim says, “A young lad came out against us, his face was like the first splinter of the new moon.” He fought bravely and killed many soldiers. Ibne Fudayl attacked his head from behind and Hazrat Qasim fell on the ground and called out Imam Husayn (a.s.). The Imam responded fast by attacking the enemy like a lion and hit Ibne Fudayl who was hurt and fell, but Hazrat Qasim was trampled by the horses and his body severely damaged.  Imam Husayn (a.s.) said, “May God curse the people who killed you. Your father and your grandfather will avenge you on the Day of Resurrection.”

THE GREAT COMPANION OF IMAM HUSAYN (A.S.), HABIB IBNE MAZAHIR (R.A.)

Once, the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) was walking with one of his companions named Mazahir. He (s.a.w.a.s.) called Mazahir’s young son Habib to him and hugged and kissed him. On inquiry from Mazahir, He (s.a.w.a.s.), with tears in his eyes replied: “While walking, I noticed that Habib was behind my beloved grandson Husayn. Wherever Husayn stepped, he would pick up sand from under his feet and put it to his eyes as a respect. O’Mazahir! This Habib will come to my Husain’s rescue one day.”

Habib ibne Mazahir was also the companion of Imam Ali (a.s.), Imam Hasan Ali (a.s.). When Imam Ali (a.s.) reluctantly accepted the worldly khilafah, he moved the capital to Kufa, and Habib also migrated to Kufa. He participated in all the battles with Imam Ali (a.s.) who had foretold Habib about his martyrdom.
When Muslim bin Aqeel (a.s.) was sent by Imam Husayn (a.s.) to ascertain the real situation in Kufa, he resided in Hazrat Mukhtar’s house and Habib was present there. Initially, about 18,000 Kufans pledged allegiance for Imam Husain on the hands of Hazrat Muslim. When Yazid (l.a.) learnt about the situation he sent Ubaidullah bin Ziad as governor of Kufa. He was infamous for lies, tyranny and treachery.  As the Kufans were expecting Imam Husayn (a.s.) to come to Kufa, it is reported that Obaidullah ibn Ziad entered Kufa after completely covering his entire body and deceived the people. But once inside the city, he showed his identity. He mercilessly killed Hazrat Muslim ibn Aqeel (a.s.) and started the reign of terror, sealed-off the city of Kufa so that nobody could enter or leave the city without Obaidullah bin Ziad’s permission. Even Imam Husayn (a.s.)’s messenger, Qays bin Mushir, was killed by throwing him from the roof-top three times. Which Islamic law requires such brutal treatment to an innocent Muslim!

Habib was heart-broken not knowing the whereabouts of Imam Husayn (a.s.). Imam Husayn (a.s.) was already in Karbala. He wrote a letter to his childhood friend, Habib explaining how Yazid’s vultures were gathering around to kill him. His messenger delivered the message to Habib. Habib kissed the letter and tears started rolling on his cheeks. His wife inquired whose letter it was. Habib replied and said: “Who would have thought the people would be so thirsty for the blood of the grandson of the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) whose name they utter in every Azaan and in every Salaat.” Habib’s wife said: “Habib, your childhood friend has called. Your master needs your help. What are you waiting for? Go Habib, before it is too late.” Habib’s slave also wanted to sacrifice his life for the King of Martyrs, Imam Husayn (a.s.). They both secretly left for Karbala.

In Karbala, Imam Husayn (a.s.) was distributing the weapons to all the Mujahedin. There was one spear left, and someone asked: “O’ Son of the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.)! Who is the last spear for? “Imam Husayn (a.s.) replied: “This is for my childhood friend Habib.” Just then, Habib was walking towards the Imam’s camp. Imam Husayn (a.s.) ran forward to greet him with great affection. On hearing the arrival of Habib, Sayyidah Zaynab (s.a.) sent her salaam to him through Fizzah.
On the morning of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, Imam Husayn (a.s.)’s son Hazrat Ali Akbar gave Azaan for the last time. Imam Husayn (a.s.) appointed Habib as the commander of one wing of his small army. Yazid’s soldiers blew the trumpet to start the battle. One by one Imam Husayn (a.s.)’s companions went to the battlefield and gave their lives for Islam.
The time for Zohar prayer arrived and when a break for Namaz was sought, Yazid’s army man Haseen uttered some ugly remarks whereupon Habib got furious resulting in a dual. Habib bravely fought and killed 100 enemies but ultimately fell and attained martyrdom.
Later, Habib’s head was cut-off along with other martyrs, but his head was not raised on the spears but was tied to a horse and pulled along the land of Karbala.

THE MERITS OF MOURNING OVER THE AFFLICTIONS OF IMAM HUSAYN (A.S.)

Imam Ali al-Reza told Rayyan bin Shabeeb, “O son of Shabeeb! If you want to mourn and lament over anyone, do so on Husayn bin Ali bin Abi Talib (a.s.) as he was beheaded like a lamb. Eighteen persons from his family, who were unparalleled in the earth, were also killed along with him. My grandfather Imam Ali Zain al-Abedin (a.s.) has said that when Imam Husayn (a.s.) was martyred, the sky rained blood and red sand. If you weep over the afflictions of Imam Husayn (a.s.) such that tears flow from your eyes and fall upon your cheeks, Allah will forgive all your sins, whether big or small and less or large in numbers. If you want to meet Allah, the Glorified in a state purified of all sins, then go for the pilgrimage to the grave of Imam Husayn (a.s.). If you desire that you may abide in the palaces of the Paradise in the company of the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) and his Progeny, then invoke Allah’s curse upon the murderers of Imam Husayn (a.s.). If you desire to earn the reward of those who were martyred with Imam Husayn (a.s.), then whenever you remember him say: I wish I had been with them, then I too would have the Great Triumph. If you desire to reside in the exalted status of Paradise, along with us, then bemoan our sorrows and sufferings and rejoice in our happiness and remain attached to our love.

Musme’ Kardeen reports from Imam Sadiq (a.s.), “Praise be to Allah, Who with His Mercy, has exalted us over all creatures, and favored our Household (Ahlul Bayt) with His blessings. O Musme’! Verily the heavens and the earth have been lamenting since the time of the Commander of the Faithful Ali (a.s.) was martyred. No one weeps over us and our affliction except that Allah sends His blessings upon him before his tears fall on his cheeks from his eyes, is thrown in the pit of hell, it’s heat will cool down as if no fire existed. The one whose heart feels pain for us will rejoice on the day he sees us on his death and remain intact till he meets us at the Fountain of Kauthar and such delicacies will be placed in his mouth that he will not be ready to move from there.

Imam Sadiq (a.s.) told Abul Qassim Qummi, “ Imam Husayn (a.s.), while in the company of “The Panjetan (a.s.)”, looks at the Zawwars who had come to his grave and weeps over his afflictions prays to Allah for their contentment and self-sufficiency. Then he says: O one who weeps over me! If you are informed about the rewards and bounties which Allah has reserved for you, then you will be more delighted. Then he seeks pardon for all their sins and faults.

Muhammad Babawayh reports from Imam Ali al-Reza (a.s.), ‘Whoever remembers our sorrows, and weeps over the oppressions which have been inflicted upon us, then on the Day of Qiyamah he shall be on our status along with us. And the one who weeps and makes others weep, then his eyes shall not weep on the day when all eyes will be weeping. And the one who sits in such a gathering where our matters are discussed, his heart will not die when all hearts shall perish.

Imam Sadiq (a.s.) after listening to his elegies for Imam Husayn (a.s.) said to Ja’far bin Affan, “O Ja’far! By Allah! The Angels close to Allah have descended here and heard your couplets for Imam Husayn (a.s.) and wept like us and even more. The Almighty Allah has reserved Paradise for you at this very moment and has forgiven your sins.”

Shaikh Saduq quotes Imam Ali al-Reza (a.s.) said, “Muharrum is a month in which bloodshed was considered unlawful by the pre-Islamic pagan Arabs, but our blood was shed in this month. Our sanctity was violated, and our children and womenfolk were made captives. Our tents were set ablaze and what ever was found therein was looted. And they did not honor our relationship with the Prophet of Allah (s.a.w.a.s.). Our eyes were injured since the day when Imam Husayn (a.s.) was martyred and tears are flowing since then. Thus, sorrowful people should mourn over it, for weeping over it nullifies the major sins.

Allamah Hilli and Khawaja Nasiruddin Tusi reports from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.), ‘Recite Surah al-Fajr in your obligatory (wajib) and supererogatory (nafillah) morning prayers, for it is particularly related to Imam Husayn (a.s.). Allah says in Surah al-Fajr Ayah 27-30, “O Tranquilled soul at (complete) rest! Return to your Lord, well pleased (with Him), and His being well pleased with you.” Here Imam Husayn (a.s.) is referred as “Tranquilled soul, well pleased (with Allah) and His being well pleased with him.” His companions from the family of the Prophet, are those who will be well pleased on the Day of Qiyamah and Allah too will be pleased with them. The one who continuously recites this Surah will remain with Imam Husayn (a.s.).

THE RISE OF BANI UMAYYAD

The most unfortunate event for Islam was the resurgence of Umayyads and their return to a position of power. They were the sworn enemies of Islam, fought many wars against Islam during the lifetime of the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) under the leadership of Abu Sufyan. Ultimately, their power was destroyed in 8 Hijra when the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.), conquered Makkah without any bloodshed. They changed the tactics and donned the garb of Islam, though Islam never entered their hearts, the blood of infidelity continued to flow in their veins. At six occasions, they were referred as the “Accursed Tree” in the Glorious Qur’an.
After the sad demise of the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.), they started showing their muscles; After Saqifa, Abu Sufyan approached Imam Ali (a.s.) and offered to help regain his right but he (a.s.) refused to have any cooperation from the well-known foe of Islam. But he went to the first caliph and on the advice of the second caliph, Abu Sufyan was offered the big province of Syria. As he had reached the old age, his son Yazid was appointed the governor of Syria.

The teachings of Islam were quickly forgotten, and the Muslim society became the slaves of the world. Before the rise of Umayyad, the way wealth of the Ummah was distributed could be gauged by the following:
Talha bin Ubaidullah when died left behind 2,200,000 Dirham and 2,000,000 Dinars in cash. Apart from this he had unspecified property worth millions. Zubair bin Awwam left behind 50,000 Dinars, 1,000 horses and hundreds of bonded servants. (Al-Istiab Ibne Abde Barr, Politics in Islam by Khuda Bakhsh Khan, Muruj az-Zahab, Massoudi)

When Usman became the third caliph, Abu Sufyan told him, “O sons of Umayyad! Now that you have obtained the kingdom, now pass it among your family from to another. As for the Paradise and Hell, we don’t know whether it exist or not.” The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) had banished Hakam bin Aas, and his son Marwan from Madinah. He was the uncle of the third caliph and Marwan was his son-in-law and appointed him as his vizier. Marwan was entrusted with the Khums from Africa (amounted to millions) and gifted him Fadak. Abdullah bin Abi Sarh was a relative of the third caliph. On the day of Conquest of Makkah, the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) ordered that he must be put to death even if he was found inside the Kaaba. The third caliph sheltered him in his house and later appointed him as governor of Egypt. Walid bin Aqaba was a cousin of the caliph, who was referred as transgressor in the Glorious Qur’an, was a drunkard and bad character, but was appointed as the governor of Kufa. One day he came to lead the morning prayer intoxicated and instead of reciting two units he recited four units and told the Muslims that if the like he could recite more! Everyone connected to Bani Umayyad obtained influential positions. They distorted Islamic ethics to dishonor the principles and laws of Islam and destroy each and everything related to Islam. Muslims instead of being the slaves of Almighty became the servants of gold and silver (riches and wealth).

THE UNIQUE JUDICIAL DECISIONS BY THE NAFS-E-RASOOL, IMAM ALI (A.S.)

Out of the countless judicial decisions by the Gateway of Knowledge, the “Nafs-e-Rasool, the Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (a.s.), a selection of such decisions is appended below:
As per Kulayni, during the time of Imam Ali (a.s.) worldly khilafah, two men approached in his presence. Each one claimed himself to be the master and the other as his slave. Imam Ali (a.s.) asked them to come the next day. He (a.s.) ordered Qambar to make two holes in a wall wide enough to place a man’s head. When they returned the next day, he asked both to place their heads in the hole. He (a.s.) said to Qambar, “Cut off the head of the slave!”. The real slave quickly withdrew his head while the real master peacefully kept his head in the hole. The Imam reprimanded the salve.

Sarui reported in Irshad that two women claimed to the mother of a child. The judge could not resole it, hence he referred it caliph Omar who also could not resolve it. Naturally Mushkilkusha Imam Ali (a.s.) was requested to help. He (a.s.) asked the women whether they had any objection if the child were cut into two and one part was given to each of them. One of the women agreed to it, but the other started crying and said to Imam Ali (a.s.), “O abul Hasan! I forego my claim. Give the child to this woman.” Thus, the child was restored to the real mother who started crying.

Once, a black man to caliph Omar and complained that and his wife both were black, but she had given birth to a child of red color. He alleged that she must have committed adultery with some man who had the same color as the child. The caliph could not resolve the matter and as usual the Mushkilkusha Imam Ali (a.s.) was requested for help. He (a.s.) asked the black man, “If I ask you a question, will you answer it correctly?” He replied in affirmative. He (a.s.) asked, “Did you ever had intercourse with your wife during her monthly course?” The man replied in affirmative. Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “The color of the child is the result of that very act of yours. You yourself is at fault not your wife!”

A soldier in the Muslim army had stayed with his wife for six months, his wife gave birth to a child and claimed that it was his child. The soldier refused to accept it reported to caliph Omar who ordered the woman to be stoned to death. Imam Ali (a.s.) was also present there and he pointed to the caliph that the Glorious Qur’an had fixed the time of pregnancy and the time of nursing of a child as thirty months,, and at another place time of nursing as complete two years. These two years if deducted from the combined time of pregnancy and nursing, the time of pregnancy remained only six months i.e. the minimum. The caliph Omar, on hearing this, said, “Had not there been Ali, Omar would have gone to dust” and released the woman!

A woman was brought to the caliph Omar accused of committing adultery. The caliph Omar ordered her to be stoned to death. As she was being taken for execution, she saw Imam Ali (a.s.) on the way. She cried for help and Imam Ali (a.s.) was requested to hear her plea. She narrated, “I took some of the family camels for grazing. I felt thirsty. I had no water with me nor available nearby. Nearby there was a man who had some water. When I requested for water, he refused to give it unless I agreed to commit adultery with him, but I refused. When I felt very thirsty and was about to die of thirst, I agreed under compulsion though, to allow him to fulfill his carnal desire.” On hearing the woman’s story, Imam Ali (a.s.) exclaimed, “The one who is compelled by circumstances in case he or she is not disobedient and does not exceed the limits of  law and go beyond the restrictions put on him or her by Allah, they are not responsible for any crime committed under such circumstances.” Hearing this the caliph Omar released the woman. (Manaqib, Bihar, Riaz etc.)

Asbagh bin Nabata reported that five persons were brought to the caliph Omar who sentenced them all to stoning to death. The Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (a.s.) when heard said that the judgement was wrong. He (a.s.) heard them separately and awarded them different punishments as follows:
To the first he awarded the punishment of beheading, stoning to death to the second, whipping to the third and half of the full punishment to the fourth. He set free the fifth after awarding him an ordinary punishment. The caliph Omar asked Imam Ali (a.s.0 to explain his above decisions.
Imam Ali (a.s.) replied, “The first of them is a Zimmi (the one who pays a certain amount to an Islamic State for the safety of his life) who has committed adultery with a Muslim woman; the second is a married man whose punishment under the religious law is stoning to death; the third is an unmarried man who stands to be punished under the same law by whipping; the fourth is a slave whose punishment in case of adultery is fixed by the religious law is half of the full punishment for that crime; the fifth of them is half-mad and has been awarded an ordinary punishment.”
The caliph Omar said, “May I not live in the nation wherein there is no Abu Hasan (a.s.) for solving such problems.”

THE GRAND EID OF MUBAHALAH

In the early days of Islam, Najran was a big center of learning whose inhabitants were idol-worshipers. Subsequently, they accepted Christianity as their religion. Najran is in the modern Saudi Arabia, south of Jeddah.
The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) had sent letters to the heads of different countries inviting them to Islam. One such letter was also sent to the bishop of Najran.
It read as follows:
In the name of the God of Ibrahim, Is’haaq and Yaqoob. This letter is from Muhammad, the Prophet and Messenger of Allah to the Bishop of Najran. Praise be to the God of Ibrahim, Is’haaq, and Yaqoob. I invite you to worship Allah instead of His servants. I invite you to come out of the rule of servants of Allah and into the rule of Allah Himself.
It is also stated that the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) included the following Ayah of the Glorious Qur’an:
“Say, (O’Muhammad) O People of the Book (Bible), come to an agreement between us and you; that we shall worship none but Allah and that we shall claim no partner to Him, and that none of us shall take others for Lords besides Allah” And if they turn away, then say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims ( who have surrendered to Allah).” (3:64)

This was the event of 10 A.H. Sixty learned priests headed by their chief monk priest, Abdul Masih, came to Madinah and went straight to meet the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) wearing golden ornaments and dressed in silken clothes. He (s.a.w.a.s.) did not like their attire and turned his face away from them. They inquired from a few influential Companions for the reason, but they did not know the state of his (s.a.w.a.s.)’s mind. The Commander of the faithful, Maula Mushkil-Kusha, Imam Ali (a.s.) came to their rescue and advised them to dress in simple clothes. When they returned wearing simple clothes, the Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) warmly welcomed them. It may be inferred that appearances and attires show the thinking of the person. They wanted to show pride and high status.

Following conversation ensued:
The Prophet: I invite you to the belief of Unity of Allah (Tauheed) and the worship of one God and submission to His will. (Then he recited the above-mentioned Ayah)
Abdul Masih: If Islam means faith in one God of the universe, we already believe in Him and follow His commands.
The Prophet: Islam has a few other signs and some of your actions show that you have not accepted true Islam. How do you claim worship of one God when you worship the cross and do not abstain from eating pork and believe that God has a son?
Abdul Masih: Certainly, he (I’sa (a.s.) was the son of God because his mother Mary- Mariyam (s.a.) had given birth to him without marrying anyone in the world. Therefore, obviously his father is the God of this universe. And, because he used to bring the dead back to life, cure the sick and create birds from clay and make them fly. It shows that he is God.
The Prophet: No, he was the servant and creature of God, and placed in the womb of his mother Mariyam (s.a.). All his power and strength were granted to him by God. At this time, Archangel Gabriel brought the following Ayah 59 of Surah Ale Imran: “Surely, the example of I’sa to Allah is like that of Adam; He created him from dust and then said to him, “Be” and he was “It means that if Isa (a.s.) could be called the son of God because he was born without father, then Adam (a.s.) deserves this title more because he was born without a father and a mother. The priests could not reply to this argument and continued to argue out of obstinacy.
Then the following Ayah 61 of Surah Ale Imran was revealed:
“And whoever argue with you in this matter after what has come to you of knowledge then say, come, let us call our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us humbly pray (to our Lord) and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars”
The Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) produced this verse before the priests and challenged for “Mubahalah”. The priests consulted each other and accepted the challenge. It was agreed that the contest would take place the next day in the open desert outside Madinah. On 24th Zilhajj, the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) came out for Mubahalah. He was holding Imam Husayn (a.s.) in his arms and held Imam Hasan (a.s.) by his hand; Lady of Paradise Sayyida Fatima Zahra (s.a.) was behind him, while the Lion of Allah, Imam Ali (a.s.) was behind her. The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) said to them, “When I pray for curse of Allah, you should say Ameen”.

In compliance of the Ayah of Mubahela, the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) brought Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn (a.s.) as his “SONS”, Sayyida Fatima Zahra (s.a.) in place of “WOMEN” while he could have brought three or more women, and Imam Ali (a.s.) as his “SELF “while the Ayah had the accommodation for three.
The priests, by seeing these shining faces emitting light, were spellbound. Their hearts trembled, and they began to shake on seeing the light radiating from the faces of The Sacred Panjetan (a.s.).
Their leader asked: “who are these persons who have come with Muhammad “A man told their names and their relationship with the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.). He could no longer hold his patience and cried out:
“By God, I am seeing such faces that if they were to pray to God to move the mountain, God Almighty would move the mountain for them. O You People of Najran, if you contest with Muhammad in this prayer of invoking curses on the liars, then I warn you that all of you will be destroyed and not a single soul will remain on this earth. I feel that it would be better to surrender to them and obey them
After the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) heard these words, he later remarked: “By God, had the Christians of Najran contested with us, they would have been transformed into monkeys and swine. Fire would have rained over them”

It is a historic event of a unique triumph of Islam. This event unquestionably established the truth about Islam and the spiritual purity of the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.). It proved beyond doubt as to who were the members of The House of the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) and their “unquestionable Truthfulness!”
There is a point to be remembered here that in Arabic language the plural tense is used for more than three persons. Allah had provided the place for three or more than three persons in the categories of “SONS”, “WOMEN”, and “SELVES”. But the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) had to decide as to who were the persons who were “TRUTHFUL” and never lied in their lifetime, because Mubahelah would bring up Allah’s wrath on the “LIARS”. It was a crucial test for IslamHence, he picked-up Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Husayn (a.s.); only two persons for the place in “SONS”. While in the place of “WOMEN”, he picked-up only his daughter, The Lady of Paradise, Sayyida Fatima Zahra (s.a.). Similarly, in the place of “SELVES”, he picked up only The Conqueror of Khyber, Imam Ali (a.s.).

After the sad demise of the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.), when Sayyida Fatima Zahra (s.a.) claimed her gifted property of Fadak, which was given to her by her father, the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.), the Caliph did not accept her testimony, that of Imam Ali (a.s.) nor Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Husayn (a.s.). These were the same Panjetan, whose Truthfulness was accepted by Allah on the eve of Mubahalah!

FORTY HADITH BY AYATULLAH RUHULLAH KHOMEINI (R.A.) - TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS

Muhammad bin Yaqub al-Kulayni narrated by Hazrat Abu Abdallah (a.s.) that he (a.s.) said, “Verily, it is mentioned in the “Book of Ali” that of all mankind, the prophets undergo the severest trials , and after them the “Awsia”, and after them the elect to the extent of their nobility. Indeed, the believer undergoes trials in proportion to his good deeds. Because Allah Almighty did not make this world a place for rewarding the believer and punishing the unbeliever. And one whose faith is feeble and his (good) deeds are few, faces fewer tribulations. Surah al-An’fal Ayah 17, “…. that He might test the faithful with a good test from Himself.” Trial means “bala” and “ibtila”. Here it means diseases and ailments, poverty, humiliation, and loss of worldly fortunes.

Human souls exists at a level of ‘potentiality’, their attachments to the bodies, and their descent to the realm of corporeal existence (Mulk) in respect of all things, including knowledge, good and evil traits, all kinds of perceptive and behavioral faculties. Gradually they move from ‘potentiality’ to ‘actuality’ with the Grace of Almighty. At first, weak impressions related to particulars (as opposed to universal), emerge in the soul, such as touch and other outward senses, moving from the lower to the higher. Following that, the inward perceptions also arise in it. However, all its faculties exist only at a level of ‘potentiality’, and they do not grow without proper stimulation. For instance, if the base kind of faculties come to dominate it, it becomes disposed to ugliness and evil, for its inner powers, such as ‘shahwah (lust), ghadab (anger) etc. impel it towards sin, licentiousness, aggression and tyrant. After following them for some time, it grows into a strange monster. However, Allah, out of His Grace and Mercy has bestowed from eternity two educators and teachers. One is intellect and discernment, which is the inner teacher and the second, the outer teachers, is represented by prophets and the divine guides, who shove the path of felicity.
None of these two can singly achieve this end without the other. Thus, Allah the Beneficent and the Sublime gave them these two educators so that that through them all the ‘potentialities’ and hidden faculties capacities, latent in the human soul, should be realized and actualized. They enable the human beings to be separated into felicitous and the wretched ones.

Every event that occurs in the realm of the body and is related to the soul’s perceptions, leaves a kind of impression in the self. This is true of good or evil deeds. Every experience of pleasure derived from food, drink, or sex, leaves an impression upon the soul, and creates or increases the love and attachment for that kind of pleasure in the soul. The more one plunges in such pleasures and lusts the greater becomes the love of this world and greater negligence towards Allah and Hereafter.  If one faces adversities, pain, and torments in this world, he will resent it. If he believes in another world, a vast world free of every kind of pain and grief, he will inevitably want to migrate to it. It is evident that all the spiritual, moral, and behavioral evils arise from the love of the world and negligence of Allah and Hereafter. The love of the world is the source of all sins, in the same way the love of Allah, the aspiration of the eternal abode of His bounty, are the source of all the spiritual cures and moral and behavioral reform.

Some say the severity of the tribulations of the ‘elect’ among Allah’s servants is that they are made to remember Allah on account of these adversities and tribulations and to pray and lament in front of His Sacred Essence. This makes them accustomed to remembering Him and keep their thoughts busy with Him. But in reality, the prophets and the perfect Awlia, through their inward light and spiritual experience ascertained that Almighty Allah has no regard for this world and everything in it is base and lowly in the eyes of His Sacred Essence, and for this reason they preferred poverty to wealth, tribulation to comfort and ease. In a tradition relating to the martyrdom of the Chief of Martyrs, Imam Husayn (a.s.), it is mentioned that he (a.s.) saw the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) in a dream when he said to Imam Husayn (a.s.), ‘There is a station for you in the Paradise which you cannot achieve except through martyrdom.’
In this world the bounties are mixed with torments and pains while in the Hereafter the bounties and rewards are pure and perfect while punishments are also pure and not mixed with any comfort. This world is only a farm for Hereafter!

SUPERIORITY OF THE NAFS-E-RASOOL (A.S.) TO OTHER PROPHETS (A.S.)

There is no comparison of Imam Ali (a.s.) with the companions of the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.), Imam Ali (a.s.) was superior to all the prophets except the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.)

The Glorious Qur’an had declared Imam Ali (a.s.) as the Self or “Nafs” of His Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) in Surah Al-Imran Ayah 61, which says, “Should anyone argue with you concerning him, after the knowledge that has come to you, say, ‘Come! Let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, our souls, and your souls, then let us pray earnestly and call down Allah’s curse upon the liars.”

By virtue of this Ayah, the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (a.s.) has achieved the superiority over all prophets except the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.). Since the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) is superior to all the creation, his self (Imam Ali) also achieves a similar status.

On the 10th of Ramazan, when Imam Ali (a.s.) was on the death bed following the attack of Abdul Rahman bin Muljim, he asked Imam Hasan (a.s.) to call in the Shias who had gathered at the door of his house. When they entered, they surrounded his bed and wept silently. Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “You may any question you like before I leave you, but your questions should be brief. “One of those present was Sa’sa’h ibn Sawhan. He asked Imam Ali (a.s.):

Let me know who is superior, you or Adam?
Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “It is not proper for a man to praise himself, but according to the Ayah:’ And as for the favor of your Lord, do announce( it),’I tell you that I am superior to Adam. When asked why it was so, Imam Ali (a.s.) explained that Adam had every means of mercy, comfort, and blessings for him in the Paradise. He was asked simply to abstain from the forbidden food. But he could not abstain himself, and he ate from the tree. As a result, he was expelled from Paradise. Allah did not forbid him (Imam Ali), from eating wheat (which, some say was the forbidden tree). But since Imam Ali was not inclined towards this temporal world, he voluntarily refrained from eating wheat. (The point of Imam Ali’s remark was that excellence of a man before Allah lies in piety and devotion, and that the height of piety lies in abstaining even from what is permissible).
Sa’sa’h asked: who is superior, you or Noah?

Imam Ali (a.s.) replied: I am superior. Noah called his men to worship Allah, but they did not obey. Their shameful mistreatment was torture for him. He cursed them and invoked Allah: ‘O my Lord! Leave not earth a single person of the unjust ones.’ After the death of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.), even though the people caused me extreme difficulty, I never cursed them. I suffered their torment with patience.
Sa’sa’h asked: Who is superior, You or Ibrahim?

Imam Ali replied: I am superior, for Ibrahim said in Surah al-Baqarah Ayah 260, “…. Show me how You revive the dead,’ He said,’ Do you not believe?’ He said, ‘Yes indeed, but in order that my heart may be at rest….’ My faith was such that I said: If the veil over the unseen were lifted, my faith would not increase.’
Sa’sa’h asked: Who is superior, you or Musa?

Imam (a.s.) replied: I am superior, for when Allah ordered Musa (a.s.) to go to Egypt to invite Firaun to the truth, Musa (a.s.) said in Surah al-Qasas Ayah 33-34: He said,’ My Lord! Indeed, I have killed one of their men, so I fear they will kill me. Aaron, my brother – he is more eloquent than me in speech. So, send him with me as a helper to confirm me, for I fear that they will impugn me.’ The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) ordered me, by the Command of Allah, to go to Makkah and to recite the Ayahs of Surah al-Taubah from the top of the Ka’bah to the Quraish infidels. I was not afraid, even though there were majority of people whose relatives were killed by my sword. Obeying his order, I performed my duty.
Sa’sa’h asked: Who is superior, you or Isa (a.s.)
” The Imam replied: I am superior for when Maryam became pregnant by the Grace of Allah and the delivery time approached, she was told: Leave this Holy House for this is a house for prayers, not a place for the delivery of children. But when my mother Fatima bint Asad , felt labor pains within the precincts of  the Holy Ka’bah, she clung to the wall and prayed to Allah in the name of that House and the Builder of that House to lessen her pain. Soon a fissure appeared in the wall, and my mother heard a mysterious voice telling her: O Fatima! Enter the House of the Ka’bah. She went in, and I was born inside the Holy Kaaba.

THE GREAT EID AL-GHADEER

After performing the last Hajj, the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) was returning on way to Madinah when the Ayah 67 of Surah al-Ma’idah was revealed saying, “O Messenger, proclaim what is revealed to you from your Lord. If you did not do so, it will be as though you have not conveyed His Message. Allah protects you from men. He does not guide the unbelieving people.” The tone of the Wahey was very stern. The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) directed to congregate the Muslims saying, “Hayya Ala Khairul Amal” meaning “Hasten to the best act” and asked to call back the forward ones and wait for the people coming behind them. The place was Ghadeer Khumm, it was a thorny area which was cleaned and a pulpit (minbur) of the seats of camels was hurriedly erected.

Guidance is a constant need of humanity which requires a guide. Did he (s.a.w.a.s.) think and provided a possible guide to the Muslims after his demise? There are three possibilities; he did not provide a guide, he left it to the Muslims to appoint one, and he did provide.
Allah graced the Muslims with Islam and the Glorious Qur’an; it is unthinkable that He (s.w.t.) did not provide a guide through His Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.). It should be noted that there were hypocrites in Madinah! In fact, he (s.a.w.a.s.) asked for paper and pen on the deathbed to write about future guidance.
The other alternative was Shura for which he (s.a.w.a.s.) never prepared the people. In fact, it was neglected by the first caliph and he nominated the second caliph. Even the second caliph admitted that it was a ‘slip’. The second caliph appointed a 6-member committee with a strange directive to kill those who disagreed with the majority which is not supported by either the Glorious Qur'an or the Sunnah of the great Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.)

The last alternative was the appointment by Allah (s.w.t.) as directed by His Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.). When Ayah 214 of Surah Shu’ara was revealed saying, “Warn your close relatives.”, a “Dawat” or feast was arranged by Hazrat Abu Talib (a.s.). It is known as “Dawat-al-Zul'asheerah”. After the feast, the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s) inquired as to who will assist him in his mission, Imam Ali, who was 11 or 13 years of age, stood up and offered his services three times but no one else responded. The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) said, “whoever will assist me will be my brother, my successor and my caliph among you.”

Going back to Ghadeer Khumm, when all Hujjaj totaling more than 120,000 assembled in the burning heat of the desert , the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s) gave a detailed and long sermon (3 hours long) about Islam ,his efforts and the virtues of Imam Ali (a.s.). In that sermon, he narrated 110 virtues of Imam Ali (a.s.) which is also the number of the name “Ali” according to the science of Abjad (An Occult science of numbers; Ain 70+Laam 30+ Ye 10). Then, he (s.a.w.a.s.) asked the mammoth crowd, “Do I not have more right over the believers than they have over themselves?” Everyone cried, “Yes, O Messenger of God.” At that moment he (s.a.w.a.s) raised Imam Ali (a.s.) and said“Whoever’s I am Mawla, Ali is also his Mawla.” Ayah 3 of Surah al-Ma’idah was revealed saying, “…. Today, the unbelievers have lost hope about your religion. Do not be afraid of them but have fear of me. On this day I have perfected your religion, completed My favors to you, and have chosen Islam as your religion.”

The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) ordered every Muslim to pay allegiance to Imam Ali (a.s.) and the Muslims responded.
This event of Ghadeer is reported in numerous Shi’a and Sunni books. Some of them interpreted the word “Mawla” as friend. Allah was threatening His beloved Prophet that if he did not proclaim this message, it will be construed as he did not convey His entire message, and that Allah will protect him from people. Was that only to say that Imam Ali was their friend? In the hot desert, people were sweating, and he (s.a.w.a.s.) delivered a long comprehensive sermon just to say that Imam Ali (a.s.) was the friend of the Muslims. Was Imam Ali not friendly to everyone, rich and poor?

Similarly, Ayah 67 of Surah al-Ma’idah says,” proclaim what is revealed to you.” Normally, the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) would narrate the Wahey immediately when received. It appears that this Wahey was received earlier but he (s.a.w.a.s.) was reluctant fearing the backlash from the hypocrites and the non-believers. That is the reason Allah guaranteed His Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) protection from men.

The auspicious occasion of Eid-e-Ghadeer was the confirmation of his Wilayat on “Dawat-al-Zulasheerah” as mentioned above. Wilayat of Imam Ali (a.s.) was also affirmed in Hadees-e-Qudsi” (The words of Allah (s.w.t.) addressed to His Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) which is not the Glorious Qur’an). It says:
“The Wilayat (loving and following) of Ali ibn Abi Talib is My fortress, and one who enters My fortress is safe from My Wrath.” (Al-Sadouq, Oyoon Akhbar al-Rida volume 1 page 146)

THE INFALLIBLE IMAM ALI AL-HADI AL-NAQI (A.S.)

The twelve infallible Imams had been bestowed by Divine Knowledge as they did not learn from any human being. The time and opportunity were the cause of the expression of specific qualities like knowledge etc.
Imam Ali al-Naqi (a.s.) had vast amazing knowledge of scientific treasures, covering all sciences of Hadith, jurisprudence, philosophy, theology, and other branches of knowledge. Following are some of the Traditions he narrated from his father and grandfathers:

Faith is that which hearts acknowledge, and deeds prove, and Islam is that which tongues witness and marriage becomes lawful with. (Difference between faith and Islam). On the Day of Resurrection, a caller will call, “O Messenger of Allah, Allah has permitted you (s.a.w.a.s.) to reward your lovers and the lovers of your Household (Progeny) who have followed them for your sake, and have been opposed to their enemies for your sake!”. Love Allah for the blessings He gives you, and love me for the love of Allah, and love my Household for my love. The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) said, “On the Day of Resurrection, I will be intercessor for four types of people; the lovers of my Progeny, one who follows them, one who shows enmity against their enemies, one who carries out their needs, and one who relieves their distress.”
He (s.a.w.a.s.) said, “My daughter was named Fatima because Allah the Almighty has weaned her and whoever loves her from Fire.” He (s.a.w.a.s.) said to Imam Ali (a.s.), “O Ali, he, who loves you, loves me, and he, who hates you, hates me. He who likes to meet Allah (on the Day of Resurrection) safe, purified, and without fearing the great horror, let him follow you O’Ali, and follow your two sons al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and (your grandsons) Ali bin al-Husayn, Muhammad bin Ali, Ja’far bin Muhammad, Musa bin Ja’far, Ali bin Musa, Muhammad bin Ali, Ali bin Muhammad, al-Hasan bin Ali and al-Mahdi the last of them.”

Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “He, who busies himself thinking of the afterlife, will be rich with no money, feel at ease with no family, and feel mighty with no fellows. Knowledge is a worthy inheritance, morals are a graceful garment, pondering is a clear mirror, and taking lessons is a sincere warner. It suffices for you to have good manners by giving up what you hate of others. He who is certain of recompense (from Allah), will give generously”

Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said, “There are three times when Du’a’ is not blocked from Allah, the Almighty; the du’a’ after the obligatory prayers, the du’a’ during the falling of the rain, and the du’a’ when one of the signs of Allah appears on His earth. (Allah responds to the supplications in the Shrines of the Infallible Imams). For the faithful death is sweeter than breeze that a faithful smells and refreshes with it and all fatigue and pain ends, and for the unbelievers it is like stinging of snakes and scorpions or even bitterer.”

Precious words of wisdom by Imam Ali al-Naqi (a.s.):
He who asks for more than his merit, is worthier of deprivation.
Patience is to possess yourself and control your anger when can show it.
People (run their affairs) in this life with money and in the afterlife with deeds.
Beware of envy for it harms you and not your enemy.
(Advising the tyrant al-Mutawakkil- the Abbasid king) Do not expect good will from one whom you have offended, or loyalty from one whom you have betrayed, or sincerity from one whom you have suspected, because the hearts of others towards you are like your hearts towards them.
Good appearance is apparent beauty and good mind is hidden beauty.
The anger at one, over whom you have authority, is meanness.

DIVINE REWARDS FOR THE SELF-LESS SACRIFICES OF THE PARENTS

The love, care and self-less sacrifices made by the parents are priceless. Allah (s.w.t.) rewards them by reminding human being about their status just after mentioning His Worship, in the following Ayahs of the Glorious Qur’an:
Surah al-Baqarah Ayah83, “…Worship no one but Allah (s.w.t.), do good to parents, relatives, orphans…”
Surah al-Nisa’ Ayah 36, “Worship Allah and do not ascribe any partners to Him, and be good to parents…”
Surah al-Isra’ Ayah 23, “Your Lord has decreed that you shall not worship anyone except Him, and (He has enjoined) kindness to parents. Should they reach old age at your side-one of them or both-do not say to them, “Fie” (Uff)! And do not chide them but speak to them noble words. Lower the wing of humility to them, out of mercy, and say, ‘My Lord! Have mercy on them, just as they reared me when I was (a) small (child)!”

In the following Ayahs parents are referred as “Gift or Bounty” (Ne’mat):
Surah Luq’man Ayah 14, “We have enjoined man concerning his parents His mother carried him through weakness after weakness, and his weaning takes two years. Give thanks to Me and to your parents. To Me is the return.”
Surah al-Namal Ayah 19, “…. My Lord! Inspire me to give thanks for Your blessing with which You have blessed me and my parents and that I may do righteous deeds which may please You ….”
Surah al-Ma’idah Ayah 110, “When Allah will say, O Jesus son of Mary (Maryam), remember My blessing upon you and upon your mother,”
Surah Maryam Ayah 32, “(Jesus said) …and to be good to my mother….”
Surah Nuh Ayah 28, “My Lord! Forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house in faith…”
Surah Ibrahim Ayah 41, “Our Lord! Forgive me and my parents, and all the faithful, on the day when reckoning is held”
Surah al-Baqarah Ayah 180, “…when death approaches any of you and he leaves behind any property, is that he makes a bequest for his parents and relatives, in the honorable manner."

The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) in reply to a question as to which deed is the most beloved in the eyes of Allah (s.w.t.), said, “Goodness towards one’s parents.” He (s.a.w.a.s.) also said, “Heaven lies beneath the feet of mothers. Allah (s.w.t.)’s satisfaction lies in the consent of parents, and His Wrath in their wrath.”
The Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “A father has right on his son that he should obey him in everything except a sin or acts involving Allah (s.w.t.)’s disobedience.”
Similarly, the believers have been warned to maintain justice and be witness for the sake of Allah even if it is against yourselves or your parents. Surah al-Nisa’ Ayah 135, “O you who have faith! Be maintainers of justice and witnesses for the sake of Allah, even if it should be against yourselves or (your) parents and near relatives, and whether it be (someone) rich or poor for Allah has greater right over them. So do not follow (your) desires, lest you should be unfair, and if you distort (the testimony) or disregard (it), Allah is indeed aware of what you do.”

Unfortunately, in the west, the family values, sincere love, and affection has slowly vanished and replaced by the cold vales of mechanical lifestyle. To enjoy the material well being, the working couples leave the children to the babysitters. The children are deprived of the sincere warmth of their mothers leaving no connection with them. Consequently, the society is producing children who become harsh and lack mercy.
