Imam Ali (a.s.)’ whole life was miracle. Imam Ali (a.s.) has numerous titles, one of which is “Mazhar-ul-Ajaaib”. Some of his miracles are reproduced below:
Recognizing Archangel Jibra’il: Imam Ali (a.s.) was sitting on the pulpit of the Mosque of Kufa and said: “O’People! Ask me anything before you loose sight of me…..” A man stood from the crowd and said: Where is Jibra’il?” Imam Ali (a.s.) looked towards the sky then looked on the earth then looked towards East and lastly looked towards West and said to the man: “You are Jibra’il” As soon as he heard the Imam, he became a bird and flew away. Every one exclaimed “We testify that you are the True Successor of the Prophet.”

Giving life to dead youth: Per Yaqoob-e-Kulayni, Imam Jaffer al-Sadiq (a.s.) said: “Bani Makhzoom clan had some relations with Imam Ali (a.s.). One a young man came to him and said that his brother had died and he was grief-stricken. Imam (a.s.) inquired if he wanted to see his dead brother, he replied in affirmative. The Imam (a.s.) went to his grave, recited some mysterious words and kicked the grave and a young man came out.
Meeting with Sam ibne Nooh: Some people came to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) from Yemen and said that they were from the race of Sam the son of Prophet Nooh and inquired as to who was his Vicegerent, and can he show them the dead Sam ibne Nooh. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) said: “Yes, with Allah’s permission”, then he told Imam Ali (a.s.) to go to arch of the Mosque and kick the floor. Accordingly, Imam Ali (a.s.) took those Yemenis to the interior of the Mosque, performed two-rakat prayer and kicked the floor. The floor cracked and an old man with bright face, and white beard reaching his belly-button came out. He recited Durood on the Imam and said: “I testify that there is no God but Allah, Muhammad is His Prophet and Chief of all Prophets and that you are the vicegerent of Muhammad and Chief of all vicegerents and I am Sam ibne Nooh” The Yemenites was carrying some ancient scriptures they compared his description with the scriptures and requested if Sam could recite some thing from the scripture to which he complied. All the Yemenites converted to Islam! (Manaqib ibne Shahar Ashoob, Bihar ul Anwar)
Meeting with the vicegerent of Prophet Iesa:
Ibne Shahar Ashoob narrates from Imam Jaffer al-Sadiq (a.s.) who said: “While on way to Siffeen, Imam Ali (a.s.) recited Azaan for Maghrib prayer when the mountain cracked open and an old man with bright face and white beard appeared out of it and saluted the Imam.
The Imam replied to him and said: “Brother Scham’oon, the vicegerent of Prophet Iesa, how are you?” He replied: “I am fine. I am waiting for the reappearance. I do not find anyone else who have suffered so much for the sake of Allah and who have high status by Divinity. My brother, be patient! Soon you will meet your cousin Prophet Muhammad. I have seen the vicegerents of other Prophets were also oppressed.”
Man becomes dog by Imam’s curse:
Sayyid Razi writes in “Khasais” that once two people came to Imam Ali (a.s.) for settlement of a dispute and the Imam after examining the oral and documentary evidence passed judgment against a person who was a Kharajite. The Kharajite alleged that the Imam did not give judgment judiciously and that God did not approve the judgment. The Imam pointing towards him said: “Get lost, you dog” The man suddenly turned into a black dog. He was shaking his tail and tears started to flow from his eyes. Out of kindness, the Imam recited some words and he regained his original status. The people in the Mosque were dumb-founded. The Imam said: “Why you are startled? Don’t you know that the vicegerent of Prophet Dawood, Asif Barkhiyya, brought the Throne of Queen Bilquees in a lightening speed. He was given only one of Allah’s Great Name while we have been given 72 Great Names of Allah!” His companions said that when he had such supreme power then why not destroy Mua’wia with it. The Imam replied: “The esteemed slaves do not supersede His (Allah) words and comply with His Wishes and Commands”
Hadees of Bird”:
Hasan Basri narrates: “Hujjaj bin Yousuf asked me about Imam Ali (a.s.), I told him that I think Ali ibne Abu Talib was a Jannati as he was the first Muslim, was the husband of Fatima Zahra, father of Hasnain, he helped the Prophet at every occasion and protected Islam.” Hujjaj said: “Curse on you, Ali killed thousands in Jamal and Siffeen, and Allah said that whoever kills a Mumin his place is Hell!” Anas bin Malik was sitting there, he stood up in anger and said: “Hujjaj, you have forced me to speak up. I testify that once the Holy Prophet was starving for three days. Allah sent a roasted bird and bread from Paradise through Jibra’il and said that it a gift from Allah for you to satisfy hunger. The Prophet raised his hands towards sky and prayed: “O’ Allah! Send to me your most beloved person to share this bird with me. As soon as the Prophet finished the prayer, Ali knocked the door but I turned him back saying the Prophet was busy. The Prophet repeated the prayer three times and I turned Ali back twice. Third time Ali said loudly “Anas, I have come three times and you have sent me back.” The Prophet heard Ali’s voice and asked me as to who was there, I replied that it was Ali and he ordered me to let him in. The Prophet asked me for reason to refuse entry to Ali, I told him that I wanted some Ansari to be honored by sharing the bird with him.” Hujjaj threatened Anas to leave and never narrate this Hadees ever.

A Dinaar and Food of Paradise:
One day, Imam Ali (a.s.) inquired Bibi Fatima (s.a.) if there was any food in the house to which Bibi replied in negative. The Imam borrowed one Dinaar and was going to purchase some eatables. On the way, he found his companion, Miqdad ibne Aswad in a desperate condition. On inquiry, he found out that Miqdad and his family was also starving. Imam Ali (a.s.) gave that borrowed Dinaar to him and proceeded to the Mosque to pray. In the meantime, Allah informed His Prophet about Imam Ali (a.s.)’s sacrifice and ordered the Prophet to eat his food with Imam Ali (a.s.) and his family. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) asked the Imam if he can join them for food. Although, the Imam (a.s.) was aware that there was no food at home but felt embarrassed to refuse. When both arrived at home, they saw that Bibi was praying while there was a pot near by from which fresh steam was blowing.
When Bibi finished her prayer, they exchanged greetings and the Prophet asked for food.
Bibi presented that pot to the Prophet and Imam Ali. Imam Ali was surprised to see the pot full of meat and looked at Bibi. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) seeing his surprise told the Imam (a.s.): “Do not be surprised! This food is from Paradise in exchange of your Dinaar you gave it to Miqdad, Allah has given this gift to my daughter Fatima as He had provided food to Mariyam.” (Abu Saeed Khudri in Amali of Tusi)
Pomegranates from pillar of Mosque:
Per Muhammad ibne Abi Bakr, once, Imam Hasan (a.s.) was sick and Imam Ali (a.s.) wanted to procure pomegranates, Imam Ali (a.s.), the “Mazhar-ul-Aja’ib” extended his hand (Yadullah) towards a pillar of the mosque and recited some sacred words and a branch of pomegranates appeared from it. There were four pomegranates on the branch, Imam Ali (a.s.) plucked all four and equally distributed between Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Husayn (a.s.) and then addressed the audience and said: “These are from Paradise”. People asked if he had the privilege to which the Imam (a.s.): “Am I not the Distributor of Paradise and Hell?” (As-Saaqib Fil Manaqib)
