THE NOBLE MESSENGER (S.A.W.A.S.)' KHUTBA SHA'BANIA

The sermon below is a comprehensive guide for Muslims in their daily life. Please read carefully:
Sayyid Ibne Ta’oos narrated in his book “Iqbal”, quoting Imam Ali al-Reza (a.s.), who heard from his father, who quoted from the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (a.s.), who said: “One day, the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) delivered the following Sermon about the Holy month of Ramadan:
O’ People! The month of Allah with Blessing, Mercy and Pardon has come to you, a month which is the best month among all months before Allah; its days are the best days; its nights are the best nights and its hours are the best hours. It is the month in which you have been invited by Allah for a feast, and has been selected as the recipient of His special favor. Your breathing merits the reward of praise while your sleeping in this month earns the reward of worship. In this month, your deeds are accepted and prayers are granted.
Therefore, with true intention and pure hearts, beseech Allah to bestow upon you His special favor to be able to observe fasting and recite the Glorious Qur’an. Because the most unfortunate and wretched one is the one who remains deprived from Allah’s pardon during this great month. With your thirst and hunger remind yourself about the thirst and hunger of the Day of Judgment; pay charity to poor and destitute, pay respect to elders; be kind towards youngsters, and observe the bonds of relationship with your kith and kin.
Watch your tongue, cover your eyes from seeing forbidden objects and prevent your ears from hearing forbidden affairs. Be kind to the orphans of the people so that the others are kind to your orphans. Repent for your sins and at the time of prayer, raise your hands upwards, because these hours are the best hours as Allah looks towards mankind with Mercy and Compassion. Their hymns (reciting praise) are granted, their cries are heard. Whatever they ask is bestowed upon them and their prayers are fulfilled.
O’ people your selves are mortgaged against your deeds and therefore, by means of repentance make yourself free. Your back has become too heavy due to sins; by prolongation of prostration make yourself light-burdened. Know that Allah has taken the oath of His Majesty and Splendor that He will not punish those who offer prayers and bow down in prostration and on the Day of Judgment will not scare them from Hell Fire.
O’ people! Whoever in this month will plan for the fast-breaking (iftar) for a believer, will be bestowed upon the reward equal to freeing of a slave and all of his past sins shall be pardoned.” He was asked: “O Prophet of Allah! But all of us are not able to arrange for the fast-breaking of a fast observer.” The Prophet replied: ‘Protect yourself from the Hell Fire and offer fast-breaking even if it happens to be a date with a glass of sherbet.”
“O’ people whoever makes his conduct better in this month, on the Day of Judgment will be bestowed upon the permit for crossing over the “Siraat”. Whoever opens the knots of difficulties of people’s affairs in this month, Allah on the Day of Judgment will make the accounting of his deeds easier.
Whoever makes people immune from his mischief, Allah on the Day of Judgment will make him immune from His Wrath. Whoever treats an orphan with respect, on the Day of Judgment Allah will treat him with honor. Whoever takes care to strengthen the family bonds with relatives, Allah will extend His Blessings upon him on the Day of Judgment, and whoever will cut-off his family ties, Allah too will deprive him from His Blessings on the Day of Judgment.
Whoever offers supererogatory prayers in this month, Allah will register for his immunity from the Fire. Whoever performs an obligatory deed in this month, will be bestowed the reward of seventy obligatory deeds performed in other months. Whoever offers a lot of salutations (Salawat) upon me in this month, on the Day of Judgment, Allah will make his balance of virtuous deeds heavier. Whoever recites one single Ayah of the Glorious Qur’an this month will be bestowed with the reward of finishing the entire Glorious Qur’an in other months.
O’ people! The gates of Paradise are opened in this month; beseech Allah that it should not be closed upon you. The doors of Hell are closed, and ask Allah that they are not opened upon you. The devils are chained in this month, ask Allah not to allow them to take over your control.
Imam Ali (a.s.) said: O’ Prophet of Allah, which one is the best deed in this month? The Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) replied: “O’ Abul Hasan! The most supreme deed in this month is the piety and renunciation of the Divine Forbidden Acts.”

RAMADHAN AND FASTING

Fasting or Saum (and related terms) has been used 14 times in the Glorious Qur’an. Ayahs 183 and 184 of Surah al-Baqarah of the Glorious Qur’an refers to fasting as, “O believers, fasting has been made mandatory for you as it was made mandatory for the people before you, so that you may fear of Allah (s.w.t.). Fasting is only for a certain number of days. One who is sick or on a journey should fast the same number of days at another time. Those who cannot afford redemption should feed a poor person. Good deeds performed on one’s own initiative will be rewarded……..”
The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) of Allah (s.w.t.) said, “Ramadhan is the month in which you have been invited to the Banquet of Allah (s.w.t.). In this month, you have been made of those people whom Allah (s.w.t.) loves and respects. Your sleep in this month is considered as worship and even your breaths are treated as glorification to Allah (s.w.t.). In the sight of Allah, this month is the best month, its days are the best days, its nights are the best nights, and its hours are the best hours. The gates of Heaven are open in this month, so ask your Lord not to close them. The gates of Hell are closed, so ask your Lord not to open them. Shaitans are in chains, so ask your Lord not to allow them to dominate over you. When you feel hungry and thirsty in this month, remember the hunger and thirst of the Day of Resurrection.”
Prophet Musa and Prophet Eisa both attained spiritual upliftment in 40 days while fasting. Torah was revealed on 7th Ramadhan, Bible was revealed on 14th Ramadhan and the Glorious Qur’an was revealed on 23rd of Ramadhan.
There is a tradition that during the Ascension (Mai’raj), the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) asked Allah (s.w.t.), “O My Lord! What is the outcome of fasting in Ramadhan?” Allah (s.w.t.) replied, “Fasting leads to wisdom, wisdom leads to knowledge, knowledge leads to certainty, when a servant attains certainty, then it does not matter to him whether he lives in difficulty or ease.”
In the Shia Islam, Fasting or Saum is the second Branch of Islam. Every Commandment of Allah (s.w.t.) is directed towards enormous benefits to the mankind. Allah (s.w.t.) loves seventy times more than a man’s mother loves him. There are countless benefits of fasting for human beings; physical, mental, and spiritual.
Physical Benefits: There are many benefits to cure various sicknesses and ailments; fasting helps weight loss, helps control diabetes by lowering blood sugar, lowers bad cholesterol and systolic blood pressure, improves hunger and immune system, improves skin health and promotes long life.
Mental Benefits: Mental health of a person is closely related to physical health. Hence, when overall health improves it would impact the mental health as well. It improves the nervous system functioning. A fasting person experiences peace and tranquility.
Spiritual Benefits: Nine out of ten Branches of Islam involve physical activities. Fasting is the only one which is between the fasting person and Allah (s.w.t.). Whether the fasting person is truly following the prohibition of fasting or not is only known to Allah (s.w.t.). Fasting purifies the soul, cleans the intention, and stimulates the person to do virtuous deeds. It enhances will to control desires, check transgression, realize the hunger and thirst of the poor. If fasting is practiced with the true intention of “Qurbatan Ilallah” or “Closeness to Allah”, the fasting person may enter the realm of angels!

SUPPLICATION (DU'A') IN THE LIGHT OF THE TRADITIONS OF AHLUL BAYT (A.S.)

There is lot of confusion about supplication or du’a’; why to supplicate, why du’a’ is not accepted and so on. Reproduced below are the instructions of the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) and his Pure Progeny (a.s.) about du’a’:

Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) said:

Supplication is the weapon of the believer, the pillar of the religion and the light of the heavens and the earth. Nothing wards off fate except supplication. Repel the doors of calamity with supplication. Allah revealed to Prophet David, “Remember Me in the good days so that I may answer you in the bad days.” Verily, a servant raises his hands in supplication, while his food is unlawful so how can his supplication will be answered. Seize the opportunity to supplicate during tenderness (of your heart). The supplication that is preceded by “Bismillah hirRahmanir Rahim” will not be rejected. Ask Allah and ask in abundance, for verily there is nothing too great for Him. A supplication asked in secret equals seventy supplications asked in open.

The Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (a.s.) said:

Know that the one in whose hands are the treasures of this world and the Hereafter has allowed to supplicate, He has guaranteed to answer you, He has commanded you to ask Him so He can give you, and He is All-Merciful. Supplication is the key to mercy and a lantern in the darkness. Supplication is the shield of the believer. Repel the surges of calamity with supplication. He who knocks on Allah’s door, it is opened for him. Verily the kindness of Allah, glory be to Him, does not contradict His Wisdom, therefore not all supplications are answered. Your request (Du’a’) must be for such as will aid you of the things whose beauty and goodness will remain for you and whose evil consequences will not touch you, and wealth will not remain for you.

The Infallible Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said:

I urge you to supplicate, for verily in supplication is a cure for every ailment. Supplication is more useful than a sharp iron spearhead. On inquiry, as to why supplications are not answered, he said, “Because you call upon One whom you do not know.” If anyone who wants his supplication to be answered then he should make a lawful earning and stop wronging people. When anyone of you feels softness and compassion, then he should supplicate, for no sooner does the heart soften then it becomes pure and sincere. A supplication remains veiled until the supplicant sends blessings on Muhammad and his Progeny. In supplication, praise Allah, then acknowledge your sins then ask your request. O Allah, verily I ask you for the sake of Muhammad and Ali, for verily they have a special station with you. If anyone has need has a need from Allah then he should send blessings to Muhammad and his Progeny then ask for his needs. Then he should again send blessings to Muhammad and his Progeny, for verily Allah is too kind than to just accept the two blessings and leave the middle, because the request for blessings on Muhammad and his Progeny is never veiled from Him.

JUSTICE, MORALITY AND FAITH IN ALLAH (S.W.T.)

In sociology, the basic principle is justice which is respecting other people’s rights. Everyone realizes the importance and necessity of morality, but the problem is in practicing it. In practice, the morality and gains are in conflict. The only thing which encourages human beings towards morality is the faith. A person is bound to the morality and justice to the extent he is bound with Allah (s.w.t.). The more he is attached to Allah (s.w.t.), the more he is attached to morality and justice. In Islam, morality and justice is directly linked to worship of Allah.
A guilty person usually flees from justice. No one will voluntarily come forward and offer himself for punishment. Faith only will make a person voluntarily seek justice against himself. In the days of early Islam, many instances were seen when guilty persons presented themselves for justice and punishment.
For every type of sins the Islamic judicial system had prescribed punishments. But there is a condition that the punishment is abandoned with the slightest degree of doubt. Possibly following the Islamic Jurisprudence, the modern judicial systems also requires that a person should be proven guilty beyond a trace of doubt for punishment.
In Islam, the executive and judicial officers do not search the guilty person but rather it is a beauty of Islam that it places an urge within a guilty person to come forward and seek justice and ultimate punishment.
A man came to the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) and confessed to have committed adultery. In such cases the confession must be repeated four times to be credible. The Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.) asked four times in separate ways hoping to save the man, but he was determined to confess and confirmed his crime and begged for punishment to be relieved from punishment in the hereafter.
Similarly, a woman came to the Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (a.s.) and said, “O Commander of the Faithful, I am married and in the absence of my husband, I have committed adultery and I am now pregnant. I wish to be purified from my sin.” Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “One confession is not sufficient. It should be repeated four times.” Then he said, “The punishment for adultery of a married woman is being stoned to death. If you are given this punishment, what happens to the baby in your womb? The baby has done no wrong and must not be stoned. Go away until your baby is born.” After a few months, the woman came again with a baby in her arms and asked to be purified as the baby was born. That was her second confession. Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “We might stone you but this baby is not guilty. It needs milk and a mother to nurse it. So, go away now since the baby needs you.” The woman returned home reluctantly and after two years reappeared before the Imam Ali (a.s.) and said, “Purify me now as the baby has been weaned and is growing up.” Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “Go away, the child still needs a mother.” The woman wept and said, “Oh God, I have confessed three times but the Imam has sent me back three times and refuse to stone me. I cannot bear being polluted with sin.”
A hypocrite, Amr bin Harris saw the woman and asked what the matter was. She explained what had happened and the man said, “I will settle this. Give me the child and let me be his guardian.” The woman was not aware that Imam Ali (a.s.) wanted her not to make the fourth confession. They went back to Imam Ali (a.s.), and the woman asked to be purified since the man had agreed to look after the child. Imam Ali (a.s.) felt very uncomfortable that the matter reached a point where no alternative was left for him but to order her to be punished.

THE INFALLIBLE IMAM ALI IBNAL HUSAYN (A.S.), ZAYN AL-ABIDIN (A.S.)

Imam Ali, Zayn-al-Abidin, was the son of the King of the Martyrs, Imam Husayn (a.s.). His mother was Shaher Bano, daughter of the last Persian king, Yazdjurd. He was born in Madinah on 5th Sha’baan 38 A.H. He was entrusted with the Divine Imamate on the Day of Ashura 61 A.H. He led the imprisoned women of Ahlul Bayt and children from Karbala to Kufa and then to Damascus. This was the most painful and humiliating journey.
When Yazid tried to talk in an insulting manner, he bravely spoke the truth whereupon Yazid threatened to kill him but Sayyida Zaynab (s.a.) intervened. During this journey, he delivered sermons introducing himself and the AhlulBayt and explained the objectives of their sacrifices which were to save Islam. When the news of Tragedy of Karbala spread far and wide and signs of revolt were apparent, Yazid released the AhlulBayt. Sayyida Zaynab (s.a.) asked for a house to mourn the martyrs of Karbala. This was the first assembly of mourning (Majlis) for the martyrs. Imam Zayn-al-Abidin and the AhlulBayt returned to Madinah en route to Karbala.
The Imam (a.s..) led a quiet life after his return to Madinah. Yazid’s army ruthlessly suppressed the revolt in Madinah. His army turned the Sacred Mosque of the Prophet into a stable for horses, killed hundreds of innocent Muslims including many companions of the Noble Messenger, and destroyed the chastity of numerous females on the clear instructions of Yazid. These beasts destroyed Madinah for three days.
The Imam lived 35 years after the tragedy of Karbala. Because of the unfavorable circumstances, the Imam started writing supplications, which demonstrates the immense knowledge of the progeny of Imam Ali (a.s.) “The Gateway of Knowledge” His supplications were collected in the famous book, “Saheefa-e-Sajjadia”. In eloquence, the book is next to his grandfather, Imam Ali (a.s.)’ “Nahjul Balagha”.
Imam Zayn-al-Abidin (a.s.) also compiled a treatise known as “Risalat-ul-Huqooq” or a Treatise of Rights, which contains the rights of human beings, including the rights of every part of the human body. If one compares this book with the United Nation’s “Charter of Human Rights”, it appears to have been copied from this Treatise.
He loved and cared for the poor. The Imam would carry bags of bread on his back at night, without showing his identity, would go around the streets of Madinah and distribute among the needy. Even when he gave alms to the needy, he would cover his face not to embarrass the person.
Hisham bin Abdul Malik, the heir of the caliph, was visiting Makka for Hajj and was sitting in a chair waiting to kiss the Black Stone in Ka’ba, he saw that a young man came towards the Black Stone and the crowd automatically separated to give way to him. The man gracefully came and kissed the Black Stone and left. He knew who the man was. It was Imam Zayn-al-Abidin (a.s.) but to overcome his embarrassment, he enquired from his companions about the identity of the young man. The famous poet of Arabia, Farazdaq, compiled a poetry extempore praising the Imam. Some of the stanzas of his poem read as, “He is the one whom the whole Makkah knows.  Every stone in Ka’ba knows him. He is the grandson of Fatima and Ali and the Noble Messenger (s.a.w.a.s.).” Hisham became furious and imprisoned him. When Imam Zayn-al-Abidin (a.s.) came to know about it, he sent some money to Farazdaq who said that he composed that poetry for the love of Allah and did not want any worldly compensation, but the imam insisted him to accept the gift.
It is said that after Karbala, the Imam wept and cried for a long time and when someone asked as to how long he was going to cry as “martyrdom was the grace and inheritance of AhlulBayt”. The Imam replied that humiliation was not the inheritance of AhlulBayt!
The Imam through his supplications had spread the teachings of Islam. Abu Hamza al Thamali was one of his companions. The Imam had taught him a supplication known as “Duae Abu Hamza Thamali”. Abu Makhnuf was another companion who was instructed by Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) to write the story of Karbala in a narrative form which he did. It became a part of the authentic account of the tragedy of Karbala and became a source of majalis all over the world.
Walid bin Abdul Malik, the Umayyad monarch realized that Imam’s teachings were spreading all over the Arabia and influencing the Muslims, hence he poisoned the Imam and he was martyred on 25th of Muharrum 95 A.H.
Once a person asked Imam Zain-ul-Abidin (A.S.), “What is the criterion for the acceptance of the prayers? The Imam replied, “Acknowledging our Wilayah and dissociating from our enemies.”
The reason why the Imam was given the title of “Zayn-al-Abidin” was that one night the Imam was praying and Shaitaan manifested himself as a huge serpent and tried to distract him. When the Imam did not take notice of him, he bites the toe of the Imam (a.s.) causing great pain, but the Imam remained oblivious of him, and carried on with his prayers. After completing his prayers, the Imam realized that it was Shaitaan, he cursed him saying, “O’ Accursed! Go away” and once again engaged himself in worship. It was at that moment that an angel called three times: “You are the embellishment of the worshippers.” Or “Zayn-al-Abidin”
Among the sayings of Imam Zayn-al-Abidin (a.s.) are, “The attributes of a believer are: piety in private, donating charity at the time of need, patience when misfortune comes, tolerance at the time of anger, and truthfulness when there is fear.”
Once, the young Imam fell sick. His father, Imam Husayn (a.s.) inquired about his health and asked further if he had any wish. The Imam replied, “My only wish is that may Allah count me among those who do not have any wish against His “Divine Decree and Divine Fate” or “Qaza-o-Qadr” He was very pleased by the answer.
The Imam’s face would turn yellow while preparing for wudu and he would tremble performing prayers due to fear of Allah. Once, Imam was praying and young Imam Mohammad Baqir (a.s.) fell in a well in the house and his mother was upset and called the Imam to rescue the boy. The Imam peacefully completed his prayer and after finishing it, he went near the well and put his hand in the well and pulled out Imam Baqir completely unharmed and without his clothes being wet.
After his return from Karbala, his uncle Mohammad-e- Hanafiyya, asked the Imam to give him the sacred assets of Imamate as he was the elder in the family. The Imam first advised him that the imamate is a Divine responsibility and when he disagreed requested his uncle to accompany him to Holy Ka’ba and let the Black Stone decide about the Imamate. Both offered salaam to the Black Stone but his salaam was replied by the Black Stone and further said, “Imamate is the right of Zayn-al-Abiding”
At the time of the destruction of Madinah, Marwan, who was an arch enemy of AhlulBayt, came to the Imam for shelter of his family. The Imam gladly provided the requested shelter!
Similarly, Haseen Ibne Numair, one of the murderers in Karbala, requested to buy food grains from the Imam. The Imam recognized him and said that he did not want to sell it but can give him free!
One of his Shias from Balakh used to come for Hajj and visit the Imam in Madinah. Once his wife told him, “You always take gifts for your Imam but has your Imam ever given you anything?” Next year when he visited the Imam the Imam asked him to join him for food. After finishing the food, the Imam wanted to pour water on his hands to wash. When the pot was full of dirty water, the Imam asked him, “What is it?” He said “water”. The Imam said, “Look carefully” When he looked carefully he saw red gems instead of water. The Imam told him to give it to his wife.
Omer Ibne Abdul Aziz was the only exception in the corrupt Umayyad Dynasty. When he was the Governor of Hejaz, one of the walls of Prophet’s mausoleum fell. After the repair, he invited Imam Zayn-al-Abidin (a.s.) to perform the opening ceremony of the mosque. He was the one who returned the Garden of Fadak to Bani Hashim and ordered to stop the sinful tradition of cursing Imam Ali from the mosques as started by Moa’via bin Abu Sufiyan.
