Maulana Jalaluddin
Muhammad Rumi was born in Balaq in the year 1207 A.D. and died in 1273 A.D. He
was the leading Sufi, poet, jurist, Islamic scholar, and a theologian. His
literary work may be divided into poetry including quatrains (rubaiyat), odes
(ghazals), Divan-e-Shams Tabriz, and the six books of Masnavi containing 27,000
lines of poetry. His prose work included The Discourses, the Letters, and the
Seven Sermons.
Balaq, a part of Khorasan, was the centre of Persian
culture. Sufism had developed there for several centuries. Apart from his father,
Bahauddin Walad, he was also influenced by the two Persian poet viz. Attar and Sanai. However, in the
latter years of his life, he met with Shams
Tabriz which completely changed him from a teacher and a jurist to an
ascetic.
In the year 2007,
UNESCO was involved in the celebration of Maulana Rum’s 800 birth anniversary.
The interpretation of
the Masnavi of Maulana Rum by conceptual and synoptic research techniques,
makes it clear that Maulana Rum honored the office of “Imamate” that is the
authority –Wilaya of Allah, the Noble Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.s.) and his 12
Divinely appointed successors. In this context, Maulana Rum focused on the Wilaya
of Imam Ali (a.s.). Allah only appoints Wali, as the successor of the Noble
Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.).
The Sufis believe that in every period of time, there is
a Divine Guide or Wali. Wilaya is the reality of Sufism; the Wali is the shadow
of Allah on earth. Imam Ali (a.s.)’s appointment by Allah is apparent by Ayah 67 Surah al-Ma’idah:“O Messenger,
proclaim what is revealed to you from your Lord. If you did not do so, it will
be as though you have not conveyed His Message. Allah protects you from men. He
does not guide the unbelieving people.” Similarly Ayah 3: “….On this day, I
have perfected your religion, completed my favors to you, and have chosen Islam
as your religion.”
This was the last Ayah of the Glorious Qur’an after The
Noble Prophet announced Imam Ali (a.s.)’s
Walaya in front of 100,000 companions returning after performing Hajj at
Ghadeer-e-Khumm. The Noble Prophet
(s.a.w.a.s)’s true tradition of “Thaqalayn” regarding the Glorious Qur’an and
his Progeny (a.s.) confirms the Wilayah of Imam Ali (a.s.).
