ANNEMARIE SCHIMMEL'S LOVE FOR AHL AL-BAYT (A.S.)

Annemarie was born on April 7. 1922 in Erfurt Germany. She was a professor at Harvard University from 1967 to 1992. At the age of 19, she received a doctorate on “The position of the caliph and the Qazi in late Medieval Egypt” from the University of Berlin. She taught History of Religion at Ankara University from 1954 to 1959. She was the first non-Muslim woman to teach in Turkish language. She was awarded a doctorate degree from University of Marburg, Germany on “History of Religions”. After retirement from Harvard University, she returned to Germany in Bonn until her death in 2003. Despite her love for Islamic cultures, she remained a devout Lutheran all her life.
She taught generations of students in a unique style; with her eyes closed reciting long passages of mystical poetry from memory. She could speak Arabic, English, German, Turkish, Urdu, Persian, Punjabi and Sindhi.

She published more than fifty books and hundreds of articles on Islamic literature, mysticism and culture. She translated Persian, Urdu, Arabic, Sindhi, and Turkish poetry and literature into English and German. Her consuming passion was Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam.
For her work on Allama Doctor Muhammad Iqbal, the “Thinker of Pakistan”, Islam and Sufism, the Government of Pakistan awarded her “Sitara-e-Imtiaz” (Star of Excellence) and “Hilal-e-Imtiaz” (Crescent of Excellence).
She was also awarded 13 other honors by Germany, Netherland, Turkey, Egypt, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan.

The following are some of the prestigious books she had written:
And Muhammad is His Messenger, Gabriel’s Wing (Iqbal’s Baal-e-Jib reel), Mohammad Iqbal-Poet and Philosopher, Islamic Names, A Dance of Sparks (Ghalib’s Poetry), Deciphering the Signs of God, The Life and work of Rumi, Islamic Calligraphy, Mystical Dimensions of Islam, Islam: An Introduction.
In one of her books titled “Karbala and Imam Husayn in Persian and Indo-Muslim Literature” she wrote, “Sacrifices are a means of reaching higher and loftier stages of life; to give away parts of one’s fortune, or to sacrifice members of one’s family, enhances one’s religious standing; the Biblical and Qur’anic story of Abraham who so deeply trusted in God that he, without questioning, was willing to sacrifice his only son, points to the importance of such sacrifice. Iqbal was certainly right when he combined, in a well-known poem in “Bal-Jibril” (1936), the sacrifice of Ismail and the martyrdom of Husayn, both of which make up the beginning and the end of Karbala.” It is equivalent to the verse of Allama Iqbal in his book “Baal-e-Jibril”, “Ghareeb o Sada wo Rangeen Hai Dasaatn e Haram * Nehayat Iski Husain Ibteda hai Ismail”
She further said in the book, “God has kept the ecstatic lovers like Husayn and Mansur in the place of gallows and rope, and cast the fighters for the faith, like Husayn and Ali, in the place of swords and spears: in being martyrs they find eternal life and happiness and become witnesses to God’s mysterious Power.
She went on, “Iqbal then goes on to show how the Khilafat was separated from the Qur’anic injunctions and became a worldly kingdom with the appearance of the Umayyads, and it was here that Husayn appeared like a raincloud, again the image of the blessing rain which always contrasts so impressively with the thirst and dryness of the actual scene of Karbala.” She also refers to the Sindhi poet Shah Abdul Latif, Mir Anis and Mirza Dabir in connection with Marthia.”

Because of her love, adornment and respect for the Ahl al-Bayt, she requested in her will that the famous Golden Saying of the Commander of Faithful Imam Ali (a.s.) “People are sleeping, they will awake after their death” be carved on her tombstone, and it was complied with. The photo of her tombstone may be seen on WIKIPEDIA.

PRAYERS FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF PARENTS

To seek forgiveness for the deceased parents, one should recite two rak’at Namaz. In the first rak’at, recite Surah al-Hamd, recite 10 times, “Rabbighfir le wa le waledaiyya wa lil momineena Youma Yaqumulhisab.” (Grant forgiveness unto me, and my parents, and all the believers, on the Day on which the (last) reckoning will come to pass). After completing the first rak’at by Ruku’ and Sujud, start the second rak’at by reciting Surah al-Hamd then recite 10 times, “Rabbighfir li walewaladaiyya wa leman Dakhala baiti Mo’menan wa lil momineena wal mominaate.” (O my Sustainer! Grant Your forgiveness unto me and unto my parents, and unto everyone who enters my house as a believer and unto all believing men and believing women (of later times). Then complete the second rak’at by ruku’ and Sujud like morning prayer. After completing the two rak’at prayer, while still seated, recite 10 times, “Rabbirhamhuma kama Rabbayani Sagheera” (O my Lord! Have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was a child)

Status of Parents in Islam: In the Glorious Qur’an, Allah (s.w.t.) have strongly emphasized the importance and status of parents. In Surah Luqman Ayah14, Allah (s.w.t.) says, “We have enjoined upon man goodness towards his parents: his mother bore him by bearing strain upon strain, and his utter dependence on her lasted two years: (hence, O man) be grateful towards Me and towards your parents, (and remember that) with Me is all journey’s end.”
Similarly, in Ayah 23 and 24 of Surah al-Isra’, Allah says, “And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him and do good to your parents. If either or both reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) uf nor chide them, but (always) speak to them reverent speech.” “And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion and say:” O my Lord! Have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) a child.”
Surah Ibrahim Ayah 41 says, “Grant Your forgiveness unto me, and my parents, and all the believers on the Day on which the (last) reckoning will come to pass.”
Surah Noah Ayah 28 says, “O my Sustainer! Grant Your forgiveness unto me and unto my parents, and unto everyone who enters my house as a believer, and unto all believing men and believing women (of later times) and grant You that the doers of evil shall increasingly meet with destruction!”

The Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) said: “One who pleases his parents has verily pleased Allah, and one who has angered his parents has verily angered Allah. One who desires a long life and an increase in livelihood should exhibit goodness towards his parents and establish bonds of friendship with his relatives. The look of a child towards his parents out of love for them is an act of worship. There are three sins whose punishment is given in this world; disownment by their parents, oppressing people, ingratitude with respect of kindness. One who has been disowned by his parents is told: “Act as you please, for I shall not forgive you.” Beware of becoming disowned by your parents, for verily the fragrance of Paradise which can be smelt from a thousand years, shall never reach the nostrils of the one who has been disowned by his parents and one who have severed the bonds of kinship (with his relatives).”

The Commander of the Faithful Imam Ali (a.s.) said: “Goodness towards parents is the greatest obligatory act.”

The Infallible Imam Ali ar-Reza said: “Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) was asked about the rights of a father on his son, He (s.a.w.a.s.) replied, “He should not call his father by name, he should not walk ahead of him, he should not sit until his father is seated, he should not do such acts because of which people abuse his father.”

THE AWAITED SAVIOR - THE INFALLIBLE IMAM MAHDI (A.T.F.)

Every major religion is waiting for the “Awaited Savior”. The Muslims are also waiting for the Savior; the Sunni Muslims believe that he will be born, while the Shi’i Muslims believe that he was the son of the Eleventh Infallible Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.). His name is Muhammad, his titles are Mahdi, Qa’im, Imam al-Asr.

At the death-bed the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.) had said, “I am leaving behind two weighty things; the Glorious Qur’an and my Pure Progeny. If you are attached with both, you will not go astray” As there is a constant struggle between Truth and Falsehood from the commencement of life on this planet, the same phenomena continued after the sad demise of the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.). The Umayyads and Abbasids continued to imprison, isolate and poison the Pure Progeny of the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.). After the martyrdom of the Infallible Imam Hasan al-Askari by the Abbasside king, Allah (s.w.t.) saved the 5-year Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.) and placed him in occultation (invisible to the common man). He will reappear when Allah wishes and fill the world with justice as it would be filled with oppressions and injustice.

There are many questions relating to his abnormal disappearance, which may be addressed as follows:
1.      How a 5-year-old boy can become the Imam of the mankind? Muslims gladly accept the Prophet hood of Prophet Isa when he was an infant!
2.      How can Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.) live so long? Prophet Noah had preached for 950 years. Prophet Isa is still alive and must be about 2000 years old! Al-Khizr is still alive, he was before the time of Prophet Musa, hence he must also be 3,000 years old. Hanafi scholar Sibt ibn al-Jawzi in his book “Tazkirat al-Khawas al-Ummah” page 325-328 gives the names of 22 people believed by Muslims to have lived from 300 to 3,000 years. Allah (s.w.t.) is Powerful and He (s.w.t.) intends “Kun Fa Yakoon” and it is done. No one can dare to challenge His Will.
3.      Why Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.) disappeared? When Allah (s.w.t.) ordered Prophet Adam and Shaytan (l.a.) to descend on earth and promised (that out of His love for the mankind), He will send Guidance to humanity. “When My Guidance comes to you, those who follow it will not go astray.” (Ta-Ha 123). Consequently, He sent 124,000 prophets and after the demise of His last Messenger the Noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.s.), and to continue with the Divine promise of Guidance, He started the Golden Chain of Imamate. The Infallible Imam Ali (a.s.) was the first Imam and the last Imam Muhammad Mahdi (a.t.f.) was designated. But the hostile forces of evil continued to either slay or poison the eleven Divinely appointed Imams. To continue the Guidance of humanity, Allah (s.w.t.) placed Imam Mahdi in Occultation. Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.) is guiding the humanity apparently concealed from physical eyes but functioning as sun is supplying energy from behind the cloud!

After the “Great Occultation “till the re-appearance of Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.), the Muslims were directed by Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) to follow such learned scholars who possessed knowledge of the Commands of the permitted and prohibited deeds in Islam. Imam Mahdi (a.t.f.) said, “…turn to the narrators of our traditions, because they are proof to you, while I am the proof of Allah to them.”

Hence, the Shi’i Muslims unanimously elect the most pious and knowledgeable person as the Grand Ayatullah who leads a very simple life and responsible for the spiritual guidance of Muslims as a whole, protects Islam when attacked, caters to the needs of the poor.
